Automated, high throughput, fluorescence-based DNA sequencing and protein/DNA assays for use in medical diagnostics, biotechnology and forensic biology require highly sensitive photomultipliers to detect the low light fluxes emitted by the fluorophores. By replacing conventional photomultiplier tubes, Philips’ digital silicon photomultipliers open up the possibility of reducing the size and power consumption of DNA sequencing and DNA/protein assay equipment so that these tests can move out of the laboratory and into the field.
